How to Define the Impact of Third Mission Activities
The topic of Impact is certainly one of the most critical for those planning and
implementing Third Mission activities. The distinction between output and outcome is the
first challenge to address, followed by the objective complexity of predicting the potential
long-term impact of the activity. However, it is important to always consider each activity as
capable of significantly altering the existing state, rather than simply creating an
experience for its own sake. The Department dedicates periodic reflection to this topic, in
order to improve faculty members’teachers' planning skills and their mastery of the tools
needed to assess the results and outcomes of each activity. The topic of impact has been
raised several times duringin the 2025 cycle of Third Mission TipsPills.

Sustainable Development Goals: ASviS Report
Third Mission activities can be considered part of the Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs) of the UN 2030 Agenda. Specifically, the activities carried out by Department
faculty can beare related to the indications contained in Goals 3 (Health and well-being), 4
(Quality education), 5 (Gender equality), and 10 (Reducing inequalities).
The ASviS (Alliance for Sustainable Development) periodic report presents the state of
implementation of the Goals, in Italy and internationally, and can provide many insights for
making Third Mission activities more meaningful. It is therefore important to determine
whether a Third Mission activity may in any way relate to one or more of the Sustainable
Development Goals, highlighting the connection in the Third Mission activity form and
informing the recipients of the relevance of this connection.
